Borderlands

This series explores the complicated relationship between natural ecosystems and manmade structures in coastal areas. I am interested in how seawalls, in particular, create a forced boundary along spaces that are, by their nature, boundless. Seawalls signify protection, permanence, and ownership of place. These attributes are at odds with the dangerous, unpredictable, and inalienable qualities of the sea. As such, there is a tension that is created as natural elements (wind, water, and salt) come up against these structures. With enough force, these sturdy façades begin to crumble, and their vulnerabilities are revealed. A sublime beauty emerges from the rubble, and these structures take on new life, carved by natural forces.
